Gary W. Burkle Obituary

Gary W. Burkle, 74, of Utica, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at his home. He was born on November 4, 1951, in Utica, a son of John A. and Mary Ellen (Juckett) Burkle.

Gary was a simple man with a complex history. He was rejected from public schools due to his "developmental disabilities". In 1966 he was placed in Rome State School where he witnessed the best and worst of human behavior. In 1972 Gary was transitioned to a new community program where he was determined to learn how to live independently. With support of ARC he did learn and at times thrived. He held several jobs in janitorial work at ARC, Griffis Air base and Vics lithograph in Oriskany. In 1999 Gary endured a heavy stroke which left him with physical limitations, but this did not limit his determination to live his best life.

Gary became a spokesperson for The Stroke Support group at MVHS before going on to volunteering with the Jaycees where he established more community connections that he used to progress his voice in the New York State Self Advocacy Association (SANYS). Gary was president of Utica Shining Stars group. He has received many awards for this work and was visibly proud.

Gary enjoyed time with family and friends above anything else. He enjoyed rides, hanging around local coffee shops and playing a game of cards. He did not like to sit idle!

There are too many people to name that have touched Garys life, but special mention goes to Germaine Robinson of ARC who always treated Gary with utmost respect giving Gary the confidence he needed.

Gary is survived by his sister, Kristin L. Burkle, of Clinton; and his nephew, Marcus (Joan) Burkle, of Milwaukee, WI. brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Tina Burkle, of Birchwood, TN; He is also survived by his aunt, Ella Blades, of Rochester; his uncles, William “Buddy” Juckett, of London, England; and Jim Bentley of Hebron, In. along with several cousins and many friends he made over the years.

He was predeceased by his mother and stepfather, Mary Ellen and Andrew Spellicy, his father, John A. Burkle, and by his brother, J. Douglas Burkle.
