Laurice Moses Obituary

Laurice (Baz) Moses,101, formerly of Norton Ave in Clinton and in the recent years of Newport, where she resided with her daughter Jamie and son-in-law Mike, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on February 27, 2026 with her family by her side. Joining her beloved husband Jimmy, she will now rest at ease with him in God’s loving arms.

Laurice was born in Utica, NY on June 21,1924, to the late Joseph Baz and Sarah (Showa) Baz. She was raised and educated in Utica, a very proud T.R. Proctor High School graduate of 1943. On March 18,1945 Laurice married the love of her life Jimmy, James A. Moses, at St. George’s Maronite Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. They shared a loving and joyful life together for nearly 77 years until Jim’s passing on January 10, 2022.

Along with being a devoted Syrian/Lebanese homemaker rich with cultural tradition, Laurice worked as a secretary throughout her life. She began her career at Rhoads Hospital during WWII, an orthopedic Army Hospital once located on Burrstone Road in Utica, after which she held various secretarial positions over the years. She especially enjoyed her years at the Clinton Courier as secretary and proofreader, and later as a faculty secretary at both Kirkland and Hamilton Colleges from which she retired in 1980. She was a communicant of St. Louis Gonzaga Maronite Catholic Church and a past member of the Saint Mary’s Guild, various homemaking clubs, and Oriska Val Seniors. In her early years she attended St. Basil’s Melkite Catholic Church.

Laurice loved life and living. She was happiest sharing her home of 62 years with Jimmy on Norton Ave in Clinton with family, neighbors, and friends of all ages. The door was always open, and she welcomed all with her infectious smile and hearty laugh. With her generous spirit, she set a beautiful table filled with delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. Lure was fun-loving, curious, and engaging. Her empathy and compassion toward all were limitless. Your joy was her joy, your sadness was her sadness. The care and concern she expressed for everyone she knew was unsurpassed.

In recent years, Laurice cherished the many visits at her home in Newport from all of the loving, loyal family and friends who brought her great joy. She loved the visits of spiritual support and friendship from Father Boutros El Hachem, who with great reverence and peace brought her smiles and happiness. In addition, the family would like to thank Yasmin, and from Hospice, Ann, Angela, and Sarah for the care and support they have all so graciously provided during the time of need.

Laurice is survived by two daughters, Shelley Moses, Vernon, and Jamie (Michael) LaPorte, Newport; a very special granddaughter, Sarah Hemendinger Basu (Neil) and two loving great granddaughters, Maebel and Sylvie Basu, grandsons George LaPorte and Thomas LaPorte (Elisa) and Dahlia LaPorte. She also leaves many thoughtful, caring nieces and nephews with whom she shared a close bond, along with a very special neighbor and friend of many years Doug Scoones.

She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters Rosemary Baz Neuguth, Gloria Baz Misnick, and brother Anthony Baz.

Laurice’s funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. Louis Gonzaga Maronite Catholic Church, 520 Rutger St. Utica, with the Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed celebrated by Father Boutros El Hachem.
