G. Irene Hummel Obituary
G. Irene Hummel, 86, of Clinton, NY passed away, peacefully to be with the Lord, with her children by her side, on Friday, May 8, 2026, at WVU Medicine Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV.
Born on August 29, 1939, in Niagara Falls, NY. Irene was the daughter of the late Edward and Genevieve (Komorowski) Wozniak. She was raised and educated in Western New York, graduating from Lewiston-Porter Central School before continuing her education at Oswego State Teachers College.
On August 13, 1960, Irene was united in marriage with John W. Hummel in Oswego, NY, sharing many loving years together until his passing in 1997. The couple made their home in Clinton, NY where Irene became a beloved and respected member of the community for more than six decades.
Irene taught at Clinton Central School District before her retirement. Prior to her time in Clinton, she also taught in the Whitesboro Central School District and Rome City School District. She devoted her life to education, giving her time and support to three generations of students, influencing and contributing to their success. She also enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, giving her joy beyond words.
Faith and community service were important parts of Irene’s life, contributing to her happiness and purpose. She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Clark Mills, NY. She was an active member in several organizations, including the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Kirkland Art Center, the Kiwanis Club of Clinton, Friends of the Lutheran Home, American Legion Post #232 Auxiliary, the Order of Moose, WV., the P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter BG.
Irene’s other passions included numerous group travels through Europe, Asia, the United States and Canada. At home she tended to her beautiful flower gardens, constantly blooming with color, much like her personality. She enjoyed all genres of music, art and theater as well. Additionally, she was a compassionate animal over, caring for many neighborhood animals and supporting agency striving to provide comfort and assistance to animals’ needs.
Irene’s sense of humor, kindness, wisdom and genuine concern for others will be dearly missed.
Irene is survived by her son, John E. Hummel of Keyser, WV; her daughter, Karlene M. Hummel of Yorkville, NY; her sister, Donna M. and brother-in-law, Allan Robinson of Oneida, NY; her sister-in-law, Mary Wozniak of Grand Island, NY; her sister-in-law, Vina Gardner of TX; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and her cherished nephew Brett Robinson.
She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Hummel; her daughter-in-law, Katrina J. Hummel; her brother, David J. Wozniak, brother-in-law, Ted Gardner, niece Michelle Wozniak and nephew Christopher Wozniak.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Noon, at the Church of the Annunciation, 7616 E. South St., (Clark Mills) Clinton, NY 13323. There will be no calling hours.
Interment will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro, NY.
