Harry R. “Red” Hibbard 1922 – 2021 CLINTON – Harry R. “Red” Hibbard, 98, of Clinton, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Red was born July 28, 1922 in Utica, the son of Harry Earl and Irene Georgianna (Bauerle) Hibbard. He was raised and educated locally attending Kernan school and Utica Free Academy. In 1942, Red joined the US Marine Corps, serving his country proudly during World War II. He was Corporal of Machine Gun Squad-1st Marine Div. G25, 5th Marines and was involved in the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Okinawa. Red was a guard for President Roosevelt at Shangri-La – today known as Camp David. After his service, on June 8, 1946, Red married Shirley M. Ogden in Utica. Mrs. Hibbard passed away in 2003. Red was the owner and operator of Hibbard Moving and Storage, until his retirement in the late 1980’s. Red belonged to many organizations through the years, stemming from military, religion, community, and the outdoors: Life Member of the DAV, Life Member of the Marine Corps League, Life Member of the Devil Dogs, Life Member and Past Comandante of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and an associate member of the PLAV. Very active in his Episcopal faith, he was a former member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, of the former All Saints Episcopal, where he was a eucharistic minister, and of Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church in Florida, a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew Acolyte. He was a member and past president of the Utica Optimist Club, a member of the Kirkland Seniors, and a Youth Fellowship Leader and was a chairman and on the activities committee for the Boy Scouts of America. Red was an avid outdoorsman. He was a hunter and fisherman and was active in fish stocking. He was one of the founders, and later an inductee in the Outdoorsman Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Boynton Beach, FL Fishing Club and Captains Club where he resided in the winters, and a member of the Fur, Fin, & Feather Club. Red was also a member and past president of the Garden Club of Utica and the Crystal Springs Golf Club. Red is survived by two sons, James Hibbard, Clinton, Timothy Hibbard, Clinton; a daughter, Janice Misiaszek, Virginia; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Carol Ritz, Lisbon, NY. He is predeceased by a sister, Doris Wilkie. Mr. Hibbard’s funeral service will be held Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 4:00 pm at the R.P. Heintz Funeral Service, Inc., 10 East Park Row, Clinton. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 2 – 4 pm, prior to the service. Interment, with Military Honors, will take place Monday morning, January 11, 2021 at 10 am at Crown Hill Memorial Park, Clinton.
