George P. Mair
1938 – 2023
George P. Mair, 85, a lifelong resident of Clinton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 30, 2023 at University Hospital in Syracuse.
George was born October 21, 1938, in Rome, the son of Philip and Marjorie (Shaver) Mair. He was raised in Clark Mills and graduated from Clinton Central High School. He then went on to Barber school, and owned and operated the Snip and Clip for over 66 years in Clinton. George has been a member of three volunteer departments, Clinton FD, Clark Mills FD, and Lairdsville FD, where he was a past fire chief. He was a proud life member of the NRA, a member of the Clinton Fish & Game Club, a past member of Clinton Kiwanis and in his youth was an Eagle Scout. George was an avid Nascar fan, attending many races all over the country through the years. He was also an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was of the Catholic faith. George was a dear friend to many, never retiring because the Barber Shop became more about visiting with his friends than it was a job.
George is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Walt Wojtanowski, N. Tonawanda; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Bonnie Mair, Clinton, Mark and Heather Mair, Oneida; thirteen grandchildren, Walter Wojtanowski, Philip Wojtanowski, Samantha Wyse, Ryan Mair, Matteson Mair, Grant Mair, Gage Mair, Sandy Williams, Jason Hunt, Benjamin Hunt, Samuel Hunt, Stephanie Hunt and Dalton O’Herien, as well as seventeen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion, Deborah Wood, Clinton; and his dear friend with whom he worked for many years, Kelly Flint, Westmoreland. George is predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Gregory.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 12:00 pm at the Helmuth-Ingall’s American Legion Post #232. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown will take place privately at the convenience of the family.
