It was very sad to read of Dick's passing. As a member of the Astronomical Society, I along with everyone else in the club, enjoyed his love of astronomy and his willingness to share his knowledge and his encouragement. The love of astronomy is something I still cherish. And I have wonderful memories of Dick, Arlene and the entire club. I know this is a difficult time for Dick's family. And I extend my heartfelt condolences to you. Please know that Dick has touched so many lives in such a very positive way. And I miss his passing.

I just heard of the passing of Professor Somer and wanted to send my condolences to you all. He sponsored the Hamilton Debate team, as well as teaching, and some of my fondest memories at college are due to him. I hope you are assuaged in your grief by the memory of all of his accomplishments, interests and how much he passed on to so many (then) young people. I especially send my prayers to Bert who accompanied (lead) us on so many of those debates.

I am embarrassed to have just learned of Richard’s passing. Dick was my friend and mentor when I was a visiting instructor at Hamilton in 1982. Both he and Arlene were the most supportive people I had the good fortune to befriend. Dick was my mentor at a time I truly needed one . His encouragement, glorious sense of humor, and sense of spirit were astonishingly authentic. We kept in touch for many years as I developed my career and never forgot the unfathomable influence he had on me, and that is no hyperbole. Arlene, I apologize for not sending my condolences earlier. I will miss Dick more than words taught in his communicative reading course can adequately convey. Hank

My heartfelt condolences Arlene, Nora, Shubert, Kevin and Augustus. Richard was a true inspirer to me. I will forever admire his knowledge, his eloquence, his patience and kindheartedness. He has shaped my life more than anyone can know and I will be forever grateful for that. Rest In Peace, Richard, I will miss you.
